Purple Sage Farms grow certified organic herbs, greens and specialty produce. The farm also integrates livestock into the operation, with their grass-fed sheep, goats and cattle.
Tim and Mike Sommer will show their greenhouses, low hoop houses, and in-field production. For weed management, they use drip irrigation, plastic mulching, hand hoeing, and cover cropping. They meet most of their fertility needs through on-farm composting and cover cropping.
Tim and Mike will also show their wash facilities and packing shed, which they have recently upgraded (following NCAP’s winter workshop with FamilyFarmed.org). Arlie Sommer, the Treasure Valley manager with Idaho’s Bounty, will share an update on USDA’s proposed Food Safety Modernization Act rules.
This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the pioneering organic farm families in Idaho. Tim Sommer and Tamara Sloviaczek started the farm in 1988. Tim worked with other organic farmers to establish Idaho’s organic certification program in 1990.
